Chinese VIN Format — 17-Digit Structure Explained

The Chinese VIN format follows the same international standard as every other market: seventeen characters, fixed positions, no exceptions. What changes is what those characters resolve to, because the manufacturer codes, plant codes and descriptor values point at companies and factories that most Western VIN databases were never built to index.

Read left to right, a VIN moves from the general to the specific — from the country and the company that built the car, through its body, powertrain and restraint system, down to a serial number that belongs to one vehicle and no other. This page walks each block in order.

The three blocks every VIN is built from

A VIN divides into three functional blocks. Positions 1 to 3 are the World Manufacturer Identifier, or WMI, which names the country of assembly and the company. Positions 4 to 8 are the Vehicle Descriptor Section, or VDS, which describes the vehicle itself. Position 9 is the check digit. Positions 10 to 17 are the Vehicle Identifier Section, covering model year, assembly plant and serial number.

Three letters never appear anywhere in a VIN: I, O and Q. They were excluded because they are too easily confused with the digits 1 and 0. If you are transcribing a number from a windscreen plate and you think you see an O, it is a zero.

Positions 1 to 3 — country and manufacturer

The first character is the country or region of final assembly, and L is China. That single letter is why a number beginning LSJ or LGX is identifiable as a Chinese-built car regardless of the badge on the bonnet.

The second and third characters narrow it to a specific manufacturer. LSJ belongs to SAIC Motor and LGX to BYD, while further codes across the L range — LVS and LVG among them, along with codes in the LB block — cover other domestic makers and joint ventures. The identifier is issued by a national authority working under the international scheme, not chosen by the manufacturer.

Positions 4 to 8 — the descriptor section

The Vehicle Descriptor Section carries the model line, body style, restraint system and powertrain. Unlike the manufacturer identifier, the meaning of these five characters is set by the manufacturer itself, which is why decoding them requires a reference table specific to the company that built the car.

This is where generic decoders fail on Chinese vehicles. A tool built around North American submissions has no descriptor table for a Changan or a Wuling, so it either returns nothing or falls back to a guess. The characters are perfectly valid; the reference data is missing.

Position 9 — the check digit

Position 9 is not information about the car. It is arithmetic. Each of the other sixteen characters is transliterated to a number, multiplied by a positional weight, and the products are added together. The remainder of that sum divided by 11 is the check digit, and where the remainder comes out at 10 the character printed is X.

The purpose is error detection. Transpose two characters, mistype one, or invent a number at random and the calculated digit will almost certainly not match the one stamped on the car. It is the fastest single test of whether a VIN is genuine.

Positions 10 and 11 — model year and plant

Position 10 is the model year, encoded on a thirty-year cycle that runs A to Y — skipping I, O, Q, U and Z — and then 1 to 9. A is 2010, L is 2020 and T is 2026. Because the cycle repeats, the code alone cannot separate a 2010 car from a 1980 one, although for Chinese-built vehicles that ambiguity is largely theoretical.

Position 11 identifies the assembly plant using a code the manufacturer defines. For companies that build the same model at several sites, this character is often the only way to tell which factory a particular car came from.

Positions 12 to 17 — the serial number

The last six characters are the sequential production number. They are unique within the combination of manufacturer, model year and plant, which is what makes the full seventeen-character string a unique identifier for one vehicle worldwide.

Serials are also the block most useful for rough sequencing. Two cars from the same plant and model year with serial numbers far apart were built months apart, which matters when a mid-cycle running change sits between them.

Frequently asked questions

How many characters is a Chinese VIN?

Seventeen, the same as anywhere else. A string of sixteen or eighteen characters is either mistranscribed or not a VIN at all. Some older Chinese vehicles predating the standard carry shorter chassis numbers, but any car built for sale in the last two decades has a full 17-character VIN.

Why are the letters I, O and Q never used?

Because they are visually indistinguishable from the digits 1 and 0 on a stamped plate or a weathered sticker. Excluding all three from the entire seventeen characters removes a whole class of transcription error before it can happen.

Does every car built in China start with L?

Every vehicle whose final assembly took place in mainland China does, including models from non-Chinese brands. Tesla's Shanghai plant uses LRW, and locally built BMW, Volvo and Volkswagen models carry L codes of their own.

Can the VIN tell me whether a car has been crashed?

No. The VIN describes how the vehicle was built and is fixed at the factory. Collision damage, odometer readings, write-offs and ownership changes live in registration and insurance databases indexed by the VIN, not in the number itself.
